Universality laws in coagulation

چکیده
We show that the process of irreversible, kinetic colloid aggregation exhibits universal behavior, independent of the detailed chemical nature of the colloidal particles. Modem methods of statistical physics, applied to a kinetic growth process, provide a good basis to model the observed behavior. Two limiting regimes of colloid aggregation are identified: rapid aggregation, limited solely by the diffusion of the growing clusters; and slow aggregation, limited by the reaction rate that leads to the formation of bonds between the clusters. In each regime the cluster structure is fractal, with fractal dimension d, 1.8 for diffusion-limited clusters and d, 2.1 for reaction-limited clusters. A scaling method is used to compare dynamic light scattering data obtained from completely different colloids aggregated under the two limiting conditions. These data provide a critical comparison of the behavior of the different colloids, and confirm the universality of each limiting regime of colloid aggregation.

Physical Universality, State-Dependent Dynamical Laws and Open-Ended Novelty
A major conceptual step forward in understanding the logical architecture of living systems was advanced by von Neumann with his universal constructor, a physical device capable of self-reproduction. A necessary condition for a universal constructor to exist is that the laws of physics permit physical universality, such that any transformation (consistent with the laws of physics and availabili...
متن کاملRole of Principles of Ethics in the Legal Function of Computer
Background: Despite the irreplaceable role of cyberspace in the behaviors of modern society and the importance of observing ethics in it, so far no research has been presented to build a model of practical ethics in this space. The present study examines how ethical laws are enacted in cyberspace. Conclusion: By descriptive analysis of the concept of ethics in cyberspace, the perception is tha...
متن کاملPhase Transitions in Nonequilibrium Steady States and Power Laws and Scaling Functions of Surface Growth Processes
Three models of surface growth processes in nonequilibrium steady state (NESS): Edwards–Wilkinson Model, Mullins–Herring Model and Kardar–Parisi–Zhang Model, are presented. Power laws, universality of non-equilibrium distributions, and scaling functions are discussed in details together with some experiment results.
متن کاملNonadiabatic quantum phase transition in a trapped spinor condensate
We study the effect of an external harmonic trapping potential on an outcome of the nonadiabatic quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic to a phase-separated state in a spin-1 atomic condensate. Previously, we demonstrated that the dynamics of an untrapped system exhibits double universality with two different scaling laws appearing due to the conservation of magnetization. We show t...
متن کاملBiological universality yields new kind of laws
Biological approximations, which are universal for diverse species, are well known. With no other experimental data, their invariance to transformations from one species to another yields exact conservation (with respect to biological diversity and evolutionary history) laws, which are inconsistent with known physics and unique for self-organized live systems. The laws predict two and only two ...
